The United States sent the icebreaker Polar Star in Antarctica, in aid of the Russian scientific ship Akademik Shokalskiy and Chinese icebreaker Xue Long (Snow Dragon), trapped by ice in the area.
This was communicated by the U.S. Coast Guard in a statement, noting that he had received a request by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), but also by the Russian and Chinese governments. The Polar Star is the only active Coast Guard icebreaker Polar USA.
